Say Hello to Hartford

Most people have never been to Hartford, Connecticut - despite it being a fairly short drive from the bright lights of New York City. Hartford sits on the east coast of the United States along the Connecticut river which originates in the mountains of New Hampshire and runs more than 400 miles to Long Island Sound and the Atlantic Ocean. It is full of great architecture and history, having been settled in 1637, and has been home to it's share of famous people. I grew up in the town of Bolton (pop. 3,500 at the time), deep in the country, just ten minutes from downtown Hartford. All these years later I find myself working in this capitol city and I've put together a little tour for you, as we are not a big travel destination and I can safely bet that most of you will never visit. We are presently experiencing a heat wave - so to my fellow New Englanders...I feel your pain... "KEEP COOL!"

Famous Hartfordites

Author, Mark Twain - Singer/Comedian Sophie Tucker

Vanity Fair Writer, Dominick Dunne
His son, Actor Director Griffen Dunne (A New York Story by Griffen Dunne)

Singer, Mark McGrath - Actress, Linda Evans

Check out Hartford Brew Fest at the Old State House!

Thanks for the tour! I love the old buildings - that is one of my favorite things to do when visitng a new place - walk around and see the architecture.

You're right, I've never been to Hartford despite living so close by for so many years! That was very enlightening. :)

You forgot Katherine Hepburn, Harriet Beecher Stowe, JP Morgan and Eriq LaSalle (and what ever happened to him after his stint on ER?).

I lived in Manchester when I was very young...don't remember too much about it. Love the photos, wished it brought back memories. :)

Marie Louise, I was born in Mt.Holly, New Jersey in 1959. Shortly after we did move to Manchester so I'm sure I was there as a two year old when you were born. Small world indeed! :)

Thank you for sharing! I have lived very close to Hartford for almost three years, yet really haven't been into the city.

Isn't that actor from Dancing with the Stars (I cannot remember his name) from Hartford. Or is it West Hartford?

My husband and I visited Hartford on vacation years ago and loved it. I even wrote a post about Mark Twain's mansion because seeing it was such a highlight for me. -Julia
